Late in 2013 several organizations in the field of mobile communications and the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK initiated a joint terminology project whose aim was to compile a vocabulary of mobile communications terminology which would act as a supplement to the earlier Vocabulary of Mobile Communication (TSK 29) published in 2001. The new Mobile Vocabulary (TSK 48) was published in May 2015.

The need for new term recommendations and definitions in Finnish arose from the large amount of new mobile devices, services and technique which have emerged in the 21st century. However, Mobile Vocabulary is not intended to replace Vocabulary of Mobile Communication, but rather to act as a supplement to the 2001 publication. The new vocabulary contains 45 central new concepts on mobile communications with term recommendations and definitions in Finnish and equivalents in Swedish and English. The relations between the concepts are illustrated with the help of concept diagrams.

Mobile Vocabulary aims to facilitate communication between the consumer and the provider of mobile services or devices. The vocabulary also supports consumer information search and can be useful when comparing different devices or services. Although consumers and service providers are the main target group of the vocabulary, the needs of professionals such as specialists on the field, translators and journalists were also accommodated when choosing which concepts to include in the vocabulary.

The terminology project was financed by telecommunications companies DNA, Elisa and TeliaSonera Finland; Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority FICORA; and Telealan edistämissäätiö TAES (a foundation for promoting telecommunications development). The working group for the terminology project consisted of representatives from DNA, FICORA, Finnet Association (central organization and co-operative forum of Finnish ICT companies), Finnish Terminology Centre and TeliaSonera Finland.
