In spring 2024, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Terminology Centre launched a glossary project with the aim to define key concepts related to basic art education. The project was carried out in parallel with a legislation reform project in the field, which began in February 2024. This made it possible for the terminology work to support the legislation drafting work, and on the other hand, for the terminology work to receive valuable feedback from the legislative work. The working group of the glossary project comprised specialists from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the National Agency for Education, and a terminologist from the Finnish Terminology Centre.
The Glossary of Basic Art Education was published in August 2025. It consists of 20 concepts related to basic education in the arts and 14 concepts borrowed from the third edition of the Glossary of Education (Ministry of Education and Culture, OKM 2024:13). The concepts are provided with definitions and notes in Finnish, term recommendations in Finnish and equivalents in Swedish. Concept diagrams are used to illustrate the relations between different concepts.
