The Glossary of Environmental Protection was expanded and updated on commission from the Ministry of the Environment between 2024 and 2026, and the new version was published in May 2026.
The glossary defines key concepts related to online services in environmental protection. The concepts are defined in a way that supports their shared use and promotes the interoperability between information systems. The Glossary contains 272 concepts, 222 of which are new or updated.
The concepts in the glossary are described through definitions and explanatory notes in Finnish. The glossary also recommends which Finnish terms should be used, and includes Swedish and English equivalents. The relations between the concepts are illustrated by concept diagrams.
The project of expanding and updating the Glossary of Environmental Protection was carried out by three working groups with experts from the Ministry of the Environment, Finnish Environment Institute, Finnish Supervisory Agency, City of Kuopio, Economic Development Centre of South Ostrobothnia (Etelä-Pohjanmaan elinvoimakeskus) and Cloudpermit. Terminologists from the Finnish Terminology Centre coordinated the working groups and carried out the terminology work involved in preparing the glossary.
The terminology work was part of a Ministry of the Environment project financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) of the European Union (NextGenerationEU).
