The Glossary of Geospatial Information in Statistics was prepared on the commission from Statistics Finland and GSGF-CARE project in 2025–26. The glossary was published in October 2026, and it contains 50 key concepts related to geospatial data, statistics, and the integration of statistical and geospatial information.
The purpose of the glossary is to facilitate communication and understanding between statistical and geospatial stakeholders. The concepts in the glossary are described through definitions and explanatory notes in English. The glossary also recommends which English terms should be used. The relations between the concepts are illustrated by concept diagrams.
The terminology work was carried out as part of the EU‑funded GSGF‑CARE project (GSGF Collaboration and Awareness in Europe), which promotes the integration of statistical and geospatial data across Europe.
The glossary was prepared in broad cooperation with national statistical organisations from four European countries, with Statistics Finland coordinating the terminology work. The working group had experts from Austria, Portugal, and Spain, too. In addition, Eurostat and statistical authorities as well as various experts in statistics and geospatial information from many other European countries were consulted. A terminologist from the Finnish Terminology Centre coordinated the working group and carried out the terminology work involved in preparing the glossary.
