The Social Media Vocabulary contains 62 concepts which are related to social media as a phenomenon and services, contents and IT solutions in the field. Some examples of the concepts of the vocabulary are crowdsourcing, swarm intelligence, news highlight, friend request, tag cloud, Ajax and reputation system. The concepts have been given Finnish term recommendations and definitions and the vocabulary also contains Swedish and English equivalents for the Finnish terms.

The vocabulary is aimed at users of social media, content creators and service providers in the field as well as PR officers, editors and translators. The vocabulary is hoped to clarify and harmonize the communication concerning social media.

The terminology project on social media was started on the initiative of the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority. The vocabulary was compiled in cooperation between representatives of the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK and DNA, Elisa, Eniro Finland, Finnet Association, Nokia, SW Television Oy / Welho, TeliaSonera, TIEKE Finnish Information Society Development Centre and the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority. Other experts in the field and language professionals also participated in the project. In addition, around 30 parties gave their feedback on the vocabulary when it was circulated for comments.

The Social Media Vocabulary was completed in May 2010. A Facebook page has also been created that provides the opportunity to give feedback on the Social Media Vocabulary.
