RAKLI (Finnish Association of Building Owners and Construction Clients) and the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK started a terminology project in the end of 2014. The aim of the project was to compile a vocabulary that contains the most important common concepts of the real estate and construction sector.

A common terminology supports all kind of communication in the field, whether it is communication by the authorities or everyday interaction in building management. In addition, the vocabulary can be used e.g. when drafting statutes and directives, and it also helps citizens to manage information independently.

During the years the actors in the real estate and construction sector have compiled several vocabularies in cooperation with the Terminology Centre, so the project was started by collecting and delimiting material. The overlap of earlier vocabularies and their connections with ontologies were compared, and such concepts that were considered essential were chosen into the vocabulary. The new vocabulary was completed in autumn 2016.

The Essential Vocabulary of Real Estate and Construction Sector contains information on 116 concepts with their definitions and additional notes in Finnish. The vocabulary gives term recommendations in Finnish and equivalents in Swedish and English. In addition, concept systems are illustrated with the help of concept diagrams.

The terminology project was financed by the Ministry of Environment. RAKLI acted as the coordinator, and the Terminology Centre TSK was responsible for the terminological work. The project work group had also experts from the Building Information Group, Finnish Real Estate Federation, HOK-Elanto, ISS Palvelut, Kiinko Real Estate Education and Statistics Finland.
