Terminfo online magazine

The Finnish Terminology Centre publishes a quarterly online magazine called Terminfo that specializes in terminological issues. The objective of the magazine is to give information on the usage of special language terms, on principles and methods of terminology work, on ongoing and future terminology projects, as well as on literature, seminars, courses etc. in the field of terminology.

Publications

Most of the terminology work carried out by the Finnish Terminology Centre results in glossaries. The platform of publication of these glossaries varies: many of the glossaries are published on our web pages in PDF format or in our TEPA Term Bank.

R & D and standardisation

Although the Finnish Terminology Centre is not really a research institute, we keep ourselves up-to-date with the theory of terminology. The systematic application of the theory is also one of our best assets in developing the methods of practical terminology work and using them in our projects. In addition, several research projects have been carried out by the Terminology Centre during the past few years, dealing with the development of the methods and tools for terminology work.

Reference library

The Finnish Terminology Centre maintains a reference library specialised in glossaries and dictionaries, both for its own in-house use and to be consulted by clients. Most of the publications in the collection are glossaries in different domains, and dictionaries.

TEPA term bank

TEPA is a term bank compiled and maintained by the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK. TEPA contains special language terms and corresponding definitions presented in the form of multilingual terminological entries. The core of TEPA is formed by the Terminology Centre's own publications, but TEPA also contains field-specific glossaries, dictionaries and terminological databases compiled by other expert organisations.

Terminology projects

Terminology work most often has typical characteristics of a project: it has clear objectives, a specified timetable and limited resources. Moreover, it is not rare that a glossary project is part of a broader project that aims to develop a digital service or prepare a reform of legislation. The Finnish Terminology Centre has a wide experience in carrying out different types of glossary projects, so we can help you to select suitable working methods and implement a project.

Membership

The Finnish Terminology Centre serves a variety of target groups, providing information on special field concepts and terminology work, and offering expert services based on concept analysis. Examples of our services include preparing glossaries, classifications and ontologies, and providing support for concept modelling work. Both private persons and legally competent corporations can become members of the Terminology Centre.

The Finnish Terminology Centre

The Finnish Terminology Centre (Sanastokeskus ry) offers information on and expert services related to terminology work, classification work, ontology work and concept modelling work for various target groups. The activities of the Terminology Centre are grounded in a thorough mastery of the theory of terminology and the practical methods based on it, and in further developing both the theory and practice.
